The head of the OEGA, Xavier Simón, joined the advisory team of the Cantabrian Mountains Legal Defense Fund (CMLDF). The main objective of this fund is to provide itself with financial support to promote legal actions to defend biodiversity and the landscape of the Cantabrian Mountains and its surroundings given the avalanche of wind energy megaprojects.
To this end, it launched a crowdfunding campaign developed through migranodearena.org, a solidarity fundraising platform, until June 5, 2021 – World Environment Day.
Three areas define the Fund’s action:
Legal defense: It intends to promote legal actions at the European, state and regional judicial level against actions of public administrations and sectoral regulations violating previous territorial planning and organization. It will also try to act if these actions contravene international treaties regulating the rights of citizen participation and respect for the environment.
Assistance to groups: The CMLDF will help in the legal actions and mobilization of different groups of citizens, associations and local communities that pursue the same goals, the defense of biodiversity and landscape. Likewise, models of allegations and resources will be created for use in administrative authorization processes of wind farms.
Online knowledge base: This fund will be used to create a public access knowledge base with tools for documentary dissemination.
The promoters of this initiative are the Association for Ecological Defense of Galiza (ADEGA), Bierzo Clean Air Platform, Merindades de Burgos Wind Group, the Platform for the Defense of the Cantabrian Mountains, Platform for the Defense of the Pasiego Valleys and the Ornithology Galician Society.
The Observatory is part of the advisory team. Its ultimate aim is to contribute to an energy transition, which integrates environmental values and leaves no rural communities behind.
