GWO technicians carry out advisory activities in the Xallas and Barcala regions

The Galician Wind Observatory has carried out over 50 advisory actions with rural agents since its creation based on the Collaboration Agreement signed by the University of Vigo, the Juana de Vega Foundation and the Isla Couto Foundation.

“Wind Advisory Day” in Mazaricos

On August 29, technical staff of the Galician Wind Observatory (OEGA) traveled to the province of A Coruña to carry out several training, advisory and knowledge transfer activities. The main activity took place in the municipality of Mazaricos, one of the Galician municipalities with the largest current wind power plant, a total of 123 operating wind turbines. “Advisory day” took place in an auditorium full of people from different councils in the Costa da Morte, A Barcala and Xallas. GWO members presented generic and specific information on new wind farms undergoing administrative processing throughout this geographical area and finally addressed the areas where levels of energy justice in the Galician territory could move forward. Thus, GWO technicians have shown how wind energy is leading the process of energy transition in Galicia. Payments to owners and the possibility of generating new income streams for the rural sector were also presented at the conference.

 

Significant presence of public officials in the activity carried out by the GWO

Attendance to the activity was high accompanied by a great deal of participation and debate. Participants asked GWO technicians numerous questions and reflected a demand for greater transparency in wind procedures and increased payments by landowners. Participants also urged the creation of effective compensation mechanisms for all the inhabitants of the area that could potentially be affected by the negative externalities of possible new wind installations.
It should be noted that the training activity carried out by GWO members at A Picota, belonging to the Mazaricos council, was attended by several mayors and other public officials from different neighboring localities, namely Mazaricos, Negreira, Zas, Serra de Outes, Coristanco and Santa Comba. The mayors and other attending elected officials appreciated the work performed by the GWO and showed interest in the advisory and research tasks carried out by the University of Vigo. In addition they signaled the need to support the neighborhood in all matters related to current wind processes.
