The Wind Energy Observatory of Galicia is organizing an information and debate session titled “Energy Communities and Community Initiatives: The Galician Ecosystem” on Thursday, November 21. The event will take place in the Hall of Degrees at the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences, University of Vigo.
The program features participation from the Galician Energy Institute (INEGA), the principal public entity supporting energy community initiatives in the region. Of the five Community Transformation Offices in Galicia, two will be represented: the office of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra and the office of the Municipality of O Rosal.
Additionally, the Provincial Council of Ourense will present an innovative support program for rural municipalities advancing in the energy transition, represented by Jose María Lago Cabo, Deputy for the Environment and Energy. Galeosol, a Galician cooperative, will also offer insights into energy services and processes tailored for rural areas.
The event will spotlight four municipalities—Vilasantar, Moeche, Xermade, and Muíños—highlighting their collaborative work with citizens and small-to-medium-sized businesses in the energy transition.
In recent years, public and private organizations across Galicia, including energy sector companies, have secured European funding for research and knowledge transfer projects centered on energy communities. Several notable projects—ALDEALIX, CEL RURAL, COMENERG, and EC4RURAL—will be presented. EC4RURAL, coordinated by the University of Vigo, also features participation from the Wind Energy Observatory of Galicia.
Given Galicia’s deep-rooted tradition of community engagement, the event will showcase initiatives linked to the region’s Communal Forest Communities, including A Reigosa (Ponte Caldelas), Tameiga (Mos), and Froxán (Lousame). Xurxo López from E.nova will discuss the community transition process in Mazaricos, one of Galicia’s most active livestock regions. The emerging Moaña Solar initiative will also be explored.
To conclude the event, the Wind Energy Observatory of Galicia will unveil plans for the first community wind farm in the region (ENERCOM). Following over a year of technological, territorial, and legal groundwork, this session will mark the formal launch of the social and community platform for the project—Galicia’s first community-led wind farm initiative.
