11 December will be the last of the 6 “Friday on the Wind” conferences held every Friday as of 6 November. Bringing the International Seminar for a Sustainable and Equitable Energy System to a close, we will delve further into the differences between the models promoting wind energy in Galicia and Portugal. This international dimension, persistent throughout all of the sessions, will first bring to us the initiative of the Platform in favor of the landscapes of Teruel. This social organization will share its experience in defense of the rural landscapes in this area, one of the most abandoned rural territories in the entire Spanish State. Javier Oquendo (Teruel) will be representing this group.
The Galician Region of Ordes represents the social struggle against wind farms that has taken place over recent years. Jessica Rey, from the organization “Salvemos a Comarca de Ordes”, will give us details concerning the lines of work developed by this social movement. Opposition against the wind farms in Serra da Groba and Monte do Galiñeiro has also been reactivated. After almost 10 years of administrative silence, the authorization procedure of several wind farms in these Southern lands of the province of Pontevedra has just begun to move forward and, with it, so have strong environmental and social movements against the wind turbines in Serra da Groba and Monte do Galiñeiro. Estudos Miñoranos Institute, a prestigious regional organization in the sociocultural field of Val Miñor, plays a special role in this social movement. Juan Hermida, President of this organization, will be speaking at this Friday to the Wind.
“Yes to wind power, but not like this” has been the slogan in many places throughout Galicia and the Spanish State in defense of another model for the accumulation of renewable power in mountains with wind potential. In Portugal, however, the situation appears to be somewhat different. Our neighboring Portuguese colleagues say, “Wind power is not bad …”. Pedro Gomes from BALADI – Federação Nacional dos Baldios – will provide details to enrich our debate and knowledge.
Damián Copena (University of Oviedo) and Sara Simões (Escuela Superior Agraria-Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo) will be moderating this conference.
