The Galician Wind Observatory took part as speakers at the VI International Workshop on Climate Change and Biodiversity, organized by the Federal University of Pernambuco in the Brazilian city of Recife (Pernambuco) from 29 to 31 October.
With the participation of Dr. Xavier Simón, head of the OEGA, this workshop brought together a broad range of scientists from different areas of Brazil and all over the world. The workshop advanced on the major global challenges faced by mankind in the face of accelerated climate change, particularly focusing on the areas of sustainability, society and technology.
VI International Workshop on Climate Change and Biodiversity
The exposition of Dr. Simón, entitled “Transição e Justiça energética: uma proposta para o Desenvolvimento Comunitário” attempted to highlight the limitations observed in wind development when rural and local communities, owners of the terrains where new industries are located, are not considered key actors. The head of the GWO debunked the main components of energy justice and listed the areas presented by the Spanish energy model, particularly the Galician, to attain fair solutions from a distributive and procedural point of view. Other Brazilian scientists and technicians made important contributions throughout the meeting concerning the state of wind development in Brazil; they made special emphasis on the expected accelerated growth of this energy source over the coming years.
The visit to Brazil also served to involve the Galician Wind Observatory in a research project on the social and economic impacts of the Ventos de São Clemente wind farm. Operating since 2016, this facility is located in the counties of Pedra, Venturosa, Caetés and Capoeiras, in Pernambuco. It consists of 8 wind farms with a total of 216.1 MW. Working together with professors from the Agro-Family Center of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco in Garanhuns, we have designed a survey to assess the level of energy justice in northeastern Pernambuco.
