The Congress, organized by the Spanish Association of Agricultural Economics, will take place from 4 to 6 September 2019 at the Polytechnic School of Engineering – Lugo Campus (Campus Terra-USC), under the theme “Agro-territorial sustainability: a vision from the Atlantic Europe”.
What will be presented?
Members of the Galician Wind Observatory will present the work entitled “Renewable energies, collective action and rural development: an initial analysis from the analytical framework of energy justice.” This work departs from the fact that renewable energies have principally developed over recent decades in rural areas with significant economic, social and environmental problems. This is especially the case of wind energy. The economic, social, environmental and political consequences derived from this energy transition process have yet to be thoroughly studied and addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective with new analytical frameworks. Among them, Energy Justice emerges attracting important scientific and political interest over recent years.
The work to be presented in the XII Congress on the case of Galicia performs an initial analysis of the wind development process from the analytical framework of energy justice. The work gives particular attention to the distributive component of energy justice and its impact on rural development. Thus, it analyzes the regulatory framework, distributive results, and the transformative impact on the rural environment. The GWO will highlight collective action in territorial management and present several cases of good practices in the sustainable management of the territory based on the economic resources derived from the development of wind energy.
The Congress scope
The organizers of this Congress point out that this edition will place special emphasis on the analysis of sustainable agri-food production models and forestry, taking into account the territorial context in which they are developed. The celebration of this venue in Lugo will allow the GWO to propose this debate from the fragile situation in the northern peninsular area – and similar spaces in other parts of Europe and the world – that are experiencing major economic and demographic problems despite the excellent opportunities they offer for the creation of wealth. It is from within this challenging context that GWO intends to introduce the debate on the role and possible models of wind power implementation to favor the development of the rural world and increase the levels of energy justice.
