The Galician Wind Observatory (OEGA) has joined the ‘Community Energy Coalition,’ a project that strengthens the push for a just and inclusive energy transition across Spain, with the collaboration of numerous participating groups.
This citizen-based Coalition was established to promote community energy, particularly energy communities throughout the country. Its goal is to make energy a right rather than a market commodity, democratizing energy and returning it to the citizens. Through broad collaboration among various energy community initiatives, entities, groups, and organizations, the Coalition aims to achieve a just energy transformation towards a fully renewable future controlled by people and communities, addressing the climate crisis.
The Coalition has already begun its activities through various proposals, including:
Monitoring the transposition of EU directives into Spanish legislation to properly define “renewable energy communities” and “citizen energy communities,” ensuring the majority participation of citizens and small local actors.
Amplifying the citizen voice in political decisions for a just ecological transition.
Promoting local and public energy projects with voluntary and open membership and democratic participation.
Sharing best practices among community energy initiatives across the country.
The objectives of the ‘Community Energy Coalition’ align closely with those of the GWO, reinforcing progress towards a just energy transition based on renewable energy sources managed by the people. This alignment promotes the participation of rural communities as key players in the new energy and ecological model. Furthermore, the Coalition aims to curb the influence of large energy companies, fight for citizens’ right to energy, and remove barriers to equitable participation.
Other notable members of the Coalition include AeioLuz, Amigos de la Tierra, the municipalities of Cádiz and San Juan del Puerto, the Río Monachil Energy Community, Ecounion, the Platform for a New Energy Model, Sapiens Energía, Som Energia, the Network for Energy Sovereignty, and researchers and faculty from the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
