The third virtual session of the International Seminar for a Sustainable and Equitable Energy System will take place on Friday, 13 November. The theme will be the view of local authorities concerning wind energy and energy transition in general. To this end, representatives of the Galician city councils and the Portuguese Municipal Chambers will be on the Panel.
In terms of Galicia, we propose a panel that involves the municipalities attached to the three groups represented in the Galician parliament as follows: Fernando Pérez, mayor of the Vilasantar City Council in the province of A Coruña. The Vilasantar city council is governed by the Popular Party. Vilasantar is a town council within a livestock region. The developer initially intended to install the 51,975 MW Lavandeira Wind Farm in this area, but it eventually desisted. The 27.6 MW Abrente Wind Farm is under environmental proceedings.
Friday on the Wind Third Session Program
Manuel Requeijo, mayor of Muras, belongs to the Galician Nationalist Bloc. Muras, places at Serra do Xistral, in the province of Lugo, is an unrivalled wind power municipality in Galicia with nearly 400 wind turbines and over 20 wind farms located either totally or partially within this territory. Moreover, Muras has developed economic support measures for its inhabitants to offset their domestic electricity bill. Mariano Iglesias, mayor of Mesía and member of the Socialist Party, is the third Galician mayor on this panel. Mesía is located in the Comarca de Ordes, a livestock region in the province of A Coruña. Mesía has no wind farm but, given its proximity to critical high voltage connection points, numerous power lines for energy evacuation cross through this area. The Gasalla wind farm, currently under environmental proceedings, is designed to be located in the area of Mesía and Frades, a bordering town hall. Manoel Batista is the president of the Câmara Municipal de Melgaço, a town in the Portuguese Alto Minho. He will also be on the panel. His participation will serve to compare the situation of Galicia and Portugal. The Câmara de Melgaço has high installed wind power capacity. Perceiving the view of the Portuguese on good authority will allow us to better understand the scope of the energy transition dynamics and give us the chance to undertake different possible energy models.
